Media usage leads to sleep problems in children

Two recent studies have shown that media usage can lead to depression in students and disrupt sleep in pre-school children.
The study by Christakis and Garrison of Seattle Children’s Research Institute focus on different uses of media and its effect on children and young adults.
In Christakis study 224 at 2 US universities complete the survey . His study assessed the link between problematic internet usage and depression.
The separate study by Garrison showed how the use of TV, video games, and online content affects children’s sleep. In the study more than 600 children aged 3 to five had increased sleep problems for every hour of daytime violent media content or evening use. Evening use resulted in significant sleep problems regardless of the content type.
Problematic Internet Usage in US College students: A Pilot Study has been published online in BMC Medicine, while Media Use and Child Sleep: The Impact of Content, Timing, and Environment, was published online June 27 in Pediatrics.

Social Media Rules issued for athletics at Olympics

The International Olympic Committee is encouraging athletes to utilise social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter. However, if they abuse the system then they could be banned from competing.
In an advisory document for competing counties they mention “actively encourages and supports athletes and other accredited persons at the Olympics Games to post, blog and tweet their experiences”
Athletes caught using the social networks for commercial or advertising purposes could see themselves in a law suit.
The IOC also mentioned that they do not want athletes commenting on their opposition or reveal any confidential information.
The IOC has put together a list of rules after the last Winter Olympics.
