The International Olympic Committee is encouraging athletes to utilise social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter. However, if they abuse the system then they could be banned from competing.
In an advisory document for competing counties they mention “actively encourages and supports athletes and other accredited persons at the Olympics Games to post, blog and tweet their experiences”
Athletes caught using the social networks for commercial or advertising purposes could see themselves in a law suit.
The IOC also mentioned that they do not want athletes commenting on their opposition or reveal any confidential information.
The IOC has put together a list of rules after the last Winter Olympics.
